5th ANNUAL BEAR RIVER WINTER CARNIVAL – 2012

Bear River Winter Carnival meeting this Fri. Jan. 27th at Oakdene Centre at 6 pm. All are welcome. Lots of volunteers are needed for the many events.

Pick up your snow/ice creations entry forms and register for events at Cherry Brook Grocery in downtown Bear River. Check out the map on the wall showing all the locations for snow-ice creations.

Prizes awarded!

Build a snowman or snow sculpture in your yard or behind the Bear River Legion and win great prizes. Call All-Ways Gardening, Sue Comeau @ 467-3258 or allwaysgardening@ns.sympatico.ca to enter. A photographer will come and take a picture right away. With your permission, you will be put on our snow sculpture map so the public can come and take a look. (location not designated yet)

TUESDAYS Bootcamp 6:30-7:30pm
SUNDAYS Cardio Kickboxing 1:00-2:00pm (starts JAN 22) at Oakdene Centre (Bear River) $5 per class. Bring a yoga mat, indoor sneakers, water bottle, and a friend!
FITCAMP is a bootcamp style workout that includes:

- total body cardio and core conditioning
- circuit, interval, and strength training
- posture, stretching, and flexibility

Cost includes refreshments, handouts, worksheets and access to a private collection of costume history and photo dating books. We are very excited about the first event of 2012 at the Rebekah Music Hall. Our friend Dianne Whelan is touring her award-winning documentary 40 Days at Base Camp : a documentary filmed on Mount Everest across the country and will be presenting it in Bear River, Friday February 3rd at 7 pm. Admission $12.

“This documentary puts a knife through the heart of the Everest myth with stories of climbers interwoven with daily life at base camp, the history of the mountain and the devastating effect climate change has had on the mountains’ ecology.”

40 Days at Base Camp was the opening film at Banff Mountain Film Festival this year and won 10th place at the Vancouver International Film Festival this fall.

There will be a FREE 9th class this winter session to make up for the fact that I now have to charge HST – so the winter session is $80 + HST making it $92 total for a 9-week session. Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency

Call for Volunteer Members

The Immigration Working Group will consult with Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency (ADEDA) staff and board, in a volunteer capacity, to support ADEDA’s role in immigrant attraction, retention, integration and settlement navigation to the Annapolis Digby region. The group will be comprised of 2-3 volunteer members with a 1 year (renewable) term.

Immigrants who are interested in serving on this group are invited to submit a Letter of Interest to the Settlement Navigator at ADEDA by 4:30pm, Friday, December 16, 2011.

A Selection Committee of the ADEDA Board will choose members of the Immigration Working Group based on a review process and selection criteria*.

Immigration Working Group Volunteer Members will have:

completed the immigration process and be settled in the Annapolis Digby region;
demonstrated knowledge of, and links to, local communities;
willingness to share their immigration experiences with others;
demonstrated experience as a paid or volunteer member of another similar working group;
knowledge of the socio-economic characteristics of this region;
ability to attend meetings on a quarterly basis.

*The Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency will actively manage and encourage diversity and inclusion within this group.

It’s a busy time of year so mark your calendars and be sure not to miss the 3rd Annual Holiday Spirit Craft Show, in Bear River November 26, 2011. With over 50 vendors displaying homemade one-of-a-kind items this is an event to attend!

Admission is $2, youth under 13 free. A hot food and drink concession will be provided all day by the Bear River Board of Trade. Local musicians will be playing throughout the day and Christmas trees and wreaths will be for sale in the garden.The past few years have been magical. Come join the fun!
